How I Choose a Smart Home Platform for a Luxury Home
By David Frangioni
I choose a smart home platform the way I choose gear for a session: by what the job needs, not by brand loyalty. For a luxury home, that comes down to four questions about reliability, customization, support and how the family actually lives.
1. How Reliable Does It Need to Be?
In a large estate, the control system runs lighting, shades, climate, audio, video and security. If it fails, the house stops working. I favor designs that keep core functions like lighting working locally even when the network or internet is down.
2. How Custom Is the Home?
Platforms such as Crestron are built for deep, custom programming in very large or unusual homes. Savant and Control4 tend to suit owners who want a polished app experience with less custom engineering. Lutron is often the right answer for lighting and shades regardless of the control platform. I compared two of the leaders in detail in Crestron vs. Savant.
3. Who Will Support It in Five Years?
The platform is only as good as the team that services it. Before picking anything, I ask who will update, fix and expand the system after move-in, especially in seasonal Florida homes that need remote monitoring and storm readiness.
4. How Does the Owner Live?
Some clients want one keypad per room and never touch an app. Others run the whole house from their phone or by voice. The interface has to fit the person, not the other way around.
