Music Technology and AI Platforms

I am David Frangioni, a music technology consultant for AI, automation and special projects. I advise music companies, labels, rights holders, technology companies and artists on how to put new technology to work without losing the people who make the music, drawing on four decades of firsts, from MIDI consulting at 16 to a live permissioned AI platform.

I have spent my career at the point where music meets new technology. I helped launch DTS surround sound to the consumer market in 1995, pioneered Pro Tools turnkey studios and Pro Tools training, and built the Modern Drummer Planet, a live platform that brings decades of drumming history, community and commerce into one place.

My position on AI in music

AI should protect the people who make music. I support tools built on consent, attribution, compensation and verification. The most useful AI I have deployed retrieves and cites human-authored work instead of replacing it.

What I do as a music technology consultant

A music technology consultant is brought in when a company has a technology decision that will shape how music is made, protected or delivered. My engagements usually start with the workflow and the rights, then the tools. I have been on the artist side of that decision as Aerosmith’s in-house engineer and technologist, and on the owner side as owner and CEO of Modern Drummer, where I built Ask Anything on the Modern Drummer Planet to answer from our own archive and credit the work it draws on. More detail on scope is on my music technology consulting page.

  • Permissioned AI strategy for music companies, labels and rights holders
  • Archive and heritage platforms for artists, publishers and brands
  • Product strategy for audio and music-technology companies
  • Workflow technology for studios and production teams

Four decades at the front of music technology

I started consulting on MIDI at 16, built one of the first drum sample libraries and mixed the first 5.1 DTS surround music CD in 1995. In the 1990s I pioneered Pro Tools turnkey studios, delivering complete Pro Tools systems to artists and producers. Today I mix catalog albums in Dolby Atmos, including the KISS Rock And Roll Over 50th anniversary edition, and I built the Modern Drummer Planet, a permissioned AI that answers from the Modern Drummer archive and credits the work it draws on.

Each of those shifts followed the same pattern. The tools changed first, and the people who understood the workflow decided who benefited. AI is that shift at a larger scale, and it is the lens I bring to every company I advise. A recent example: What a Music AI Advisor Does for a Technology Company. The studio and immersive side of this work lives at Frangioni Media.
