WHAT IS IMMERSIVE AUDIO?

Immersive audio is the new multi-dimensional approach to audio storytelling that immerses listeners in an expanded sonic field that goes beyond traditional surround sound. While “surround sound” exists in a horizontal plane around the listener, “immersive audio” is designed to produce a fully immersive experience where audio is perceived as coming from all around you.

Immersive audio is becoming the standard and is considered the obvious path forward for audio recording due to its scalability, consistency and the way one mix adapts to every playback system, from cinemas and studios to cars, soundbars and headphones.

DAVID FRANGIONI

My ears were trained behind a drum kit long before they were trained on a console. I was playing at two, studied through my childhood in Boston, and followed drumming into technology. Years as Aerosmith’s engineer and technologist taught me how a record is built one track at a time, and that is exactly what an immersive remix depends on: knowing what the band played, what the producer intended and what the original mix chose to leave out.

Surround has been part of my work since the mid-1990s, and so has designing the rooms it is heard in. Through Audio One, the company I founded, my teams won more CEDIA awards in a given period than any other integration firm. Along the way I worked on records and rooms for Ozzy Osbourne, the Rolling Stones, Ringo Starr, Elton John, Sting, Phil Collins, Shakira and Chick Corea, and earned gold and platinum albums as an engineer, programmer and technical consultant.

Today I mix catalog titles in Dolby Atmos, design immersive rooms through Frangioni Media, develop artists at All Access IDA and publish Modern Drummer. The full story is on my About page.

Dolby Atmos Mixing for Catalog Albums

I mix classic catalog albums in Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround from the original multitrack recordings, using the original stereo mix as the reference so the album keeps its identity while it opens into space. My recent work includes the Dolby Atmos and 5.1 mixes of KISS Dressed to Kill for its 50th anniversary edition, and the Dolby Atmos and 5.1 mixes of the original 1976 Rock And Roll Over for the Rock And Roll Over 50th anniversary boxsets, released by Universal Music on November 6, 2026.

That catalog work builds on a long history in surround: in 1995 I mixed the first 5.1 DTS surround music CD, and I have since worked on more than 100 surround releases. Frangioni Media explains the process in How a Classic Album Gets Remixed in Dolby Atmos. If you are an artist, label or catalog owner planning an immersive release, start a private conversation with me about Dolby Atmos mixing.
