Dolby Atmos Mixing for Classic Albums and Legacy Catalogs

I mix Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround versions of classic records for labels, estates and artists. Recent work includes the Atmos and 5.1 mixes of KISS Dressed to Kill and Rock And Roll Over for the 50th anniversary editions, and the Dolby Atmos mix of Diana Ross’s “I’m Coming Out.”

Why Labels and Estates Call Me

A catalog record already has an audience that knows every note. My job is to open the record up in space while keeping everything that made people love it. I have been doing that kind of work for a long time. In 1995 I mixed the first music CD ever released in DTS 5.1, helped introduce the format to listeners at home, and I have released over a hundred surround titles since.

Before that, I was Aerosmith’s in-house engineer and technologist for seven albums, and I have gold and platinum records as an engineer, programmer and technical consultant. I understand how classic records were made because I was in those rooms.

Recent Catalog Work

  • KISS, Dressed to Kill 50th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition (October 2025): new Atmos and 5.1 mixes built from the original multitrack tapes, on the set’s Blu-ray.
  • KISS, Rock And Roll Over anniversary editions from Universal Music, out November 6, 2026: new Atmos and 5.1 surround mixes based on the 1976 album mix, released alongside Eddie Kramer’s new 2026 album mix.
  • Diana Ross, “I’m Coming Out”: my Dolby Atmos mix.

How a Project With Me Works

Every catalog project starts with a short scoping call: which titles, which formats, which release dates and who signs off. From there:

  • Tapes and transfers: I work with your archive or vault team to locate and align the original multitracks, so the mix is built from real stems, not an upmixed stereo master.
  • Reference and approvals: the original stereo mix stays the reference throughout, and I build in review points for the artist, estate, management and label.
  • Deliverables: Atmos masters, separate 5.1 mixes for Blu-ray, and documentation your archive can use for decades.
  • One accountable engineer: you deal with me from first transfer to final delivery.

I explain my mixing framework in detail on Frangioni Media’s How a Classic Album Gets Remixed in Dolby Atmos. If you need a room to do this work yourself, Frangioni Media also handles Dolby Atmos studio design and build. More coverage of my work is on my press page.

Questions About Catalog Atmos Mixing

Who mixes classic albums in Dolby Atmos?

David Frangioni creates Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround mixes of classic records, including KISS Dressed to Kill and Rock And Roll Over for the 50th anniversary editions, and Diana Ross’s “I’m Coming Out.”

Can you create an Atmos mix from a stereo master?

I build catalog Atmos mixes from the original multitrack tapes whenever they exist, because an upmix of a stereo master just spreads out a mix that is already finished.

Do you deliver 5.1 mixes for Blu-ray as well?

Yes. I deliver separate 5.1 surround mixes alongside the Atmos masters, because a 5.1 release is heard differently and needs its own balance.

How do I start a catalog Atmos project with you?

Contact me through davidfrangioni.com. We start with a short scoping call covering titles, formats, release dates and approvals.
