An original production-used miniature from Clint Eastwood’s Firefox (1982), the submarine conning tower and arctic diorama built by Apogee Productions, is Lot 146 in Hanlin’s Movie and TV Memorabilia Auction on November 6 and 7, 2026. An original maquette of the MiG-31 Firefox jet follows as Lot 147. Both come from my collection.
Eastwood’s Cold War Thriller
Firefox was Eastwood at the height of his power as a star and a director. He produced, directed and starred as Mitchell Gant, a retired Air Force pilot sent into the Soviet Union to steal the MiG-31, a jet that responds to the pilot’s thoughts. The film leaned on cutting-edge visual effects, and Apogee Productions, the Academy Award-winning effects studio, built much of that world in miniature.

Lot 146: The Conning Tower and Arctic Diorama
This diorama comes from the arctic refueling sequence, where Gant brings the stolen MiG-31 down on the frozen shelf to meet a hidden American submarine. It was built under special effects supervisor Grant McCune. The base is hand-carved styrofoam, painted and textured as packed snow and ice, measuring 30 by 30 inches. The fiberglass conning tower, on a wooden armature, breaks through the ice with two miniature sailors in fabric parkas on deck, and a hexagonal weather station tent of lead and wire completes the scene.
Miniatures like this are how effects-driven films were made before CGI, and surviving examples from Eastwood’s own productions are hard to find.

Lot 147: The MiG-31 Firefox Maquette

An original maquette of the Firefox itself, the jet at the center of the film. It measures 18.5 by 13 by 3 inches, painted flat white with the blue teardrop cockpit, and the base shows adhesive from a previous mount.
